Fiumicino is 70 km away - plan the hop
Rome's main airport, Fiumicino, sits about 70 km down the coast from the port. A taxi runs roughly EUR 120-150 and 60-75 minutes. Shared airport shuttles that time their runs to ship schedules are cheaper and take around 45-50 minutes on the motorway.
The train looks tempting on a map and is not: the Leonardo Express into Roma Termini, then a regional train back out to Civitavecchia, adds up to 2-2.5 hours with bags. Stacking an overnight long-haul flight and this transfer onto embarkation day leaves little slack, which is why many passengers spend the night before in Rome or Civitavecchia.
Which terminal you will check in at
Civitavecchia has four cruise terminals. Amerigo Vespucci is run jointly by Costa, MSC and Royal Caribbean. Roma Cruise Terminal, on piers 12-13, handles a lot of the Royal Caribbean, MSC, Costa and Norwegian traffic. Bramante and Pier 12 Bis take the smaller luxury and expedition ships - Viking, Silversea, Seabourn and their like.
The berths are spread out along the breakwaters and are not walkable from one another. A free port shuttle links Largo della Pace at the port gate with all the terminal piers. If you arrive by train, ARGO buses run from Civitavecchia station to the Largo della Pace hub in about 15 minutes for EUR 2 one way, luggage included.
Doing Rome by train without missing the ship
The FL5 regional line runs about every 30 minutes. The ticket to buy is the BIRG, a 5-zone day pass that covers the return train plus Rome's metro, buses and trams until midnight; as of 2026 it costs EUR 14 (older guides still quote EUR 12). Buy it at the station counter, a tabacchi or a newsstand, and stamp it in the platform machine before boarding.
Termini, 75-85 minutes out, is rarely the best stop. Roma San Pietro is 50-60 minutes out and a 15-20 minute walk from the Vatican; Ostiense, about 65 minutes, connects to Metro B for the Colosseum. For a 5:30pm all-aboard, a train out of San Pietro around 2:30pm leaves a sensible margin once the station walk and the port shuttle are counted.
Italian rail strikes are the real hazard. On a strike day regional trains are only guaranteed 6-9am and 6-9pm on weekdays, which can mean no midday train back at all. Check for a sciopero notice before you commit to doing Rome on your own.
