Northern Europe Cruises

Northern Europe is a summer-only region, and the further north the itinerary goes, the narrower the window. The Baltic capitals and the Norwegian fjords work from late spring to early autumn. Trips up the coast to Tromso, the North Cape and Svalbard are built around the midnight sun, which Visit Norway gives as May 20 to July 22 in Tromso, May 14 to July 29 at the North Cape and April 20 to August 22 on Svalbard. Expect cool, changeable weather even in July, and pack for rain.

Baltic itineraries changed shape after 2022. St. Petersburg, once the centrepiece, dropped off when lines suspended Russian calls that year, and the replacements have stuck: more time in Stockholm (Princess added overnights there), Helsinki and Tallinn, plus calls such as Visby in Sweden and Gdansk's port at Gdynia. If an older review raves about the Hermitage, it describes a trip that is no longer sold.

The fjords are tightening their rules. Norway's zero-emission requirement for its five World Heritage fjords - the Naeroyfjord, Aurlandsfjord, Geirangerfjord, Sunnylvsfjord and Tafjord - took effect on January 1, 2026 for ships under 10,000 gross tons and reaches larger ships on January 1, 2032. Ships calling in those fjords must also plug into shore power. For now the big ships still sail to Geiranger and Flam; small expedition ships are the first to need clean propulsion.

Most sailings are round trips from Southampton, Copenhagen, Amsterdam or Rotterdam, which keeps flights simple, and seven to fourteen nights is typical. British Isles loops and Iceland add-ons fill out the menu.
