Cab fares are per car, not per head
Cozumel's taxis run off a fixed rate board posted at each pier's taxi stand, priced per cab for one to four riders or five to eight. Groups heading the same way often split a car with strangers from the ship, which is the simplest way to cut the cost. Fares are quoted in US dollars, pesos are accepted, and it is cash only - no cards.
The short hops are not cheap for the distance. Puerta Maya to Chankanaab is about five minutes and was posted at $15 one way for up to four people. Photograph the rate board before you get in so there is no argument at the other end.
The $10 line on your bill
Mexico started charging a per-passenger cruise fee in July 2025. It doubled from $5 to $10 on August 1, 2026, and the published schedule takes it to $15 in July 2027 and $21 in August 2028. It is charged once per sailing no matter how many Mexican ports you visit, and lines fold it into the fare and taxes rather than collecting it at the pier.
No fourth pier
A fourth pier for ships carrying more than 7,000 passengers was proposed in 2019. In August 2025 the mayor and city council formally opposed it, citing the island's environment, so three piers remains the ceiling for now - which is also why six-ship days feel as busy as they do.
