Canada & New England Cruises

This is the autumn cruise. Sailings run from about May to October, but demand piles into mid-September through mid-October for the leaves. Color comes earlier the further north you go: Quebec City, Halifax and Bar Harbor tend to peak from late September into early October, Boston, Portland and Newport from early to mid-October. A sailing in the first two weeks of October that covers both ends gives the best odds of catching it somewhere.

Itineraries come in three shapes. Seven-night round trips from Boston are the most common; round trips from New York or Cape Liberty run nine to twelve nights to reach far enough into the Maritimes; and one-way trips between New York or Boston and Quebec City or Montreal add the St. Lawrence and need flights at both ends. Quebec City and Montreal departures run the route in reverse, starting in French Canada and working south.

Bar Harbor, the stop for Acadia National Park, has been squeezing cruise traffic. Since a 2022 vote it caps disembarking cruise passengers at 1,000 a day, with calls booked before the vote allowed to go ahead, and in November 2024 voters narrowly rejected - by 63 votes - a plan to raise the limit to 3,200. Big ships booked since the cap can't land their full passenger load there, so check that Bar Harbor is still on your itinerary before planning an Acadia day.

Every trip enters Canada, so a passport is the sensible document even on a closed-loop round trip, and essential on a one-way. The region suits older travelers, history buffs and anyone who prefers lobster rolls and lighthouses to beaches; it is a poor fit for families tied to the school calendar, since the best weeks fall in term time.
