   Odda (Hardangerfjord Scenic Cruising)

   Odda sits at the head of the Sørfjorden, the long southern arm of the Hardangerfjord, and grew up around a carbide smelter rather than tourism - the industrial buildings are part of the view. Some itineraries only scenic-cruise the fjord past orchards and waterfalls without landing, so check whether yours actually calls.

   • Låtefossen, the twin waterfall that drops beside the road south of town
   • Buerbreen, an arm of the Folgefonna glacier, reached by a walk from the valley
   • A RIB safari along the Sørfjorden cliffs
   • Trolltunga - spectacular, but a 10-12 hour round trip that does not fit a normal port day

   Getting ashore

   When ships do call, they berth alongside at the quay in Odda with the small town centre a few minutes away; on scenic-cruising days there is no landing at all.

5. Day 5

   Nordfjordeid

   A village at the head of Eidsfjorden in Nordfjord that only opened to cruise ships in 2019 and now takes a surprising number of them. It is known within Norway for the Nordfjord horse breed and for the Myklebust ship - a 30 m Viking vessel burned in a chieftain's grave here, reconstructed full size in a purpose-built hall by the water.

   • Sagastad and the reconstructed Myklebust Viking ship
   • The Nordfjord horse stud and riding centre
   • Hoddevik and Stad peninsula beaches, about an hour away
   • Walking or cycling the flat valley paths along the Eid river

   Getting ashore

   Ships tie up to a floating Seawalk pier that extends out to meet them, so you walk ashore rather than tender, and the village centre is 5-10 minutes on foot.

   Europe's largest seaport, and a city that looks nothing like the rest of the Netherlands - flattened in 1940 and rebuilt as an experiment in modern architecture. Cruise ships tie up at the old Holland America headquarters on the Wilhelminakade, directly under the Erasmus Bridge, with the skyline of the Kop van Zuid overhead.

   • The Cube Houses and Markthal at Blaak
   • Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, the mirrored art storage building you can walk through
   • Euromast for the view over the port
   • Delft or The Hague, both about 30 minutes by train

   Getting ashore

   Ships berth alongside at Cruise Terminal Rotterdam on the Wilhelminakade; the centre is a 20-minute walk over the Erasmus Bridge or one metro stop from Wilhelminaplein.
