Puerto Rico

San Juan cruise port

The piers sit directly under the walls of Old San Juan, which makes this one of the few Caribbean calls where you step off and are already somewhere worth being. Blue cobblestones, 16th-century Spanish fortifications, and a working city rather than a shopping arcade. It is also a major homeport, so a call often lands in the middle of turnaround traffic.

A fixed $21 cab from the airport

Passengers starting a cruise here fly into Luis Muñoz Marín (SJU), and the tourist taxis from the airport run on fixed zone fares rather than the meter. Old San Juan, Puerta de Tierra and every cruise pier - the Pan American piers on Isla Grande included - fall in the same zone, posted at $21 per cab. On top of that drivers can add $1 per bag, a $3 airport fee and $1 late at night, and the current rates are displayed on the taxi itself. Airport dispatchers at the terminal exits quote the fare before you get in.

Plan to walk, not ride the trolley

Older guides still point cruisers to the free Old San Juan trolleys that once looped from the piers to El Morro and San Cristóbal. As of 2026 they are not running. From the Old San Juan piers the forts are a walk up narrow, steep streets that most people manage at an ordinary pace - wear real shoes. Passengers on ships at the Pan American piers are across the San Antonio Canal and need a taxi in.
