Bonaire

Kralendijk cruise port

Bonaire's entire coastline is a protected marine park, and the island is organised around getting into it - shore diving is the default here, marked by numbered yellow stones along the coast road rather than dive boats. Ships dock in the middle of tiny Kralendijk, so town is a two-minute walk, but town is small. The point is the water, or the salt pans and flamingos down south.

The $10 tag, and who needs one

Bonaire's nature fee covers anyone who goes into the sea - not just divers, but snorkelers, swimmers, kayakers and freedivers too. Most visitors pay $40 for a calendar-year pass; cruise passengers can buy a one-day version for $10 instead. Children under 13 are exempt.

Pay online through STINAPA's payment portal before the ship arrives. It emails a QR code that you show along with ID, which saves hunting for a sales point on a short call. If a ship excursion includes snorkelling, ask whether the fee is already in its price.

Washington Slagbaai takes cards only

The same fee also covers Washington Slagbaai National Park, all 4,286 hectares of it. If you have not paid in advance, the entrance booth takes credit and debit cards but not cash - the opposite of what many small-island ticket windows expect.
