Ascent is the newest ship on the Fort Lauderdale canal run by a decade, and the fare reflects it without being the top of the range. Caribbean Princess does twelve nights with Cartagena, the canal and Willemstad for a few hundred dollars less; Nieuw Amsterdam's twelve nights cost about the same and swap the ABC islands for Costa Rica and the Greater Antilles; Rotterdam's twelve-night loop is slightly higher, Zuiderdam's fourteen-night Passage close to double, and Oceania's twenty-night double transit on Marina is another tier entirely. Celebrity has run the Cartagena-plus-ABC pattern on this class before, a 2022 honeymoon thread was weighing it on Edge, so the itinerary is settled rather than experimental. What the extra money over Princess buys is the 2023 hull and, if the Ascent choice threads are a guide, a quieter ship: two 2025 posters weighing her against Princess or Royal alternatives on Caribbean routes were steered to Ascent for a calmer, more adult atmosphere and better food, and a solo traveler was told to ask for a shared dinner table.

Eleven nights with four at sea is the cost of a round trip to Colombia and Panama: two sea days out to Cartagena, one between the canal and Aruba, one home. The canal is a partial transit, not ocean to ocean. Ascent goes in through the newer Agua Clara locks to Gatún Lake and back out the Caribbean side, and the itinerary blocks two days for it, the transit itself and a day alongside for the Colón excursions to the lock observation decks. The second week is the part few canal loops offer, Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire on three consecutive days, a beach-and-dive block rather than a sightseeing one, so the sailing feels like two different cruises joined by a sea day.

A 2022 poster on a closed-loop partial transit from Fort Lauderdale on Emerald Princess was told by a booking agent that no passport was needed and by the confirmation that it was; the replies, including a former consular officer and a terminal check-in worker, agreed a birth certificate and photo ID technically pass and that you should carry a passport regardless. Best fit: couples who want the canal as a single day's spectacle, three islands after it and a new ship for the sea days between. Wrong fit: anyone who wants Costa Rica or the Pacific side, or who resents four sea days on an eleven-night fare.
