Check whether you got the AJ Dock
Juneau's waterfront has several berths, and they are not equal. The South Franklin Street dock and the Cruise Ship Terminal just above it put you a few minutes' walk from downtown and the tram. The AJ Dock is roughly a mile south of the center, and ships there run a continuous shuttle that drops at the Mount Roberts Tramway station and near the Alaska State Museum - about $5 a person.
If your ship is on the AJ Dock, budget that shuttle into your timing, especially on the way back to all-aboard.
Getting to Mendenhall without a tour
The glacier is about 12 miles from the docks. Independent glacier shuttles leave from outside the Mount Roberts Tramway ticket office near the cruise terminal, and the ride is about 30 minutes each way. The city bus is not a good substitute - its closest stop is more than a mile from the visitor center.
The visitor center charges a $5 entrance fee for anyone 16 and over from May 1 to September 30. For the 2026 season the center is staffed seven days a week, 9am to 6pm from May 1, after reduced hours the year before.
Juneau now caps passengers per day
2026 is the first season of Juneau's daily passenger limits, agreed with the cruise industry: 16,000 passengers on most days and 12,000 on Saturdays, down from as many as 21,000 on the busiest days before. The 2026 season ran from April 27 to October 6, with about 1.69 million passengers expected.
The lower Saturday cap is meant to make it the least congested day of the week downtown. Even under the caps, 16,000 people arriving at a town this small means midday lines at the tram and the glacier shuttles, so the earliest departures are the ones to aim for.
