Four piers, and only one is on the Buda side
Budapest has no single cruise terminal. River ships tie up at city-centre piers between Margaret Bridge and Liberty Bridge - the main ones are Akadémia, the MAHART international pier, Vigadó tér and Batthyány tér - and assignments move with ship size, river traffic and water levels. The first three are on the Pest bank, 6-17 minutes' walk from the centre. Batthyány tér is across on the Buda side, about 27 minutes on foot from central Pest, so check which one is printed on your documents before you plan a walk with luggage.
From Ferenc Liszt airport
The airport is about 13 miles out, 30-50 minutes by road depending on which pier you need. Budapest taxis run on fixed fares and take cards; the airport-to-pier ride is roughly HUF 10,000-20,000. Public transport costs a fraction of that but means one to three changes plus a walk to the river - fine with a daypack, awkward with two suitcases. The 100E airport express bus runs 24 hours to Deák Ferenc tér in 35-50 minutes depending on traffic; as of 2026 a ticket is HUF 2,500, from machines, ticket offices or the Budapest GO app.
Low water is the summer wild card
In mid-July 2026 the Danube at Budapest dropped to within a few centimetres of its 2018 record low. Some ships were stranded or held in port, and lines including Avalon cancelled departures while AmaWaterways, Viking and others swapped ships, added coach transfers or cut sailings short.
It does not happen every year, and it can still upend a sailing that begins or ends here. Read your line's low-water policy before booking a summer departure, and leave some slack in flights in case the cruise ends with a coach rather than a gangway.
