Dunedin (Port Chalmers) cruise port

Port Chalmers is a small deepwater port at the mouth of Otago Harbour, roughly 13km short of the Scottish-founded city it serves. There is a strip of cafes and galleries by the berth, but Dunedin proper and the wildlife of the Otago Peninsula both need transport. Between the albatross colony and the penguins, this is one of the better wildlife port days in New Zealand.

The cheap way in is the route 14 bus

Besides the paid cruise shuttle, Port Chalmers has an ordinary Orbus service into town - route 14. For the 2025-26 season the regional council added extra trips on 30 of the busiest cruise days (those with more than 2,000 passengers due), running every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes at weekends in the morning and afternoon peaks. In the city it stops outside Centre City New World on Cumberland Street, and bus tickets are also sold at a booth in the Port Chalmers library.

The local bus is shared with commuters, and the council's stated aim with the extra trips was to leave room for residents, which is a fair hint at how full it gets on a big day.

Doing the Taieri Gorge train yourself

The train does not leave from the wharf. Dunedin Railways runs its public trips from Dunedin Railway Station, about 20-30 minutes from Port Chalmers and 500m from the Octagon. As of 2026, the Taieri Gorge trip is a 5-hour return departing at 9:30am Thursday to Monday, and a shorter Seasider Express runs north along the coast toward Seacliff and Karitane - 1 hour 45 minutes from 12pm on selected days.

That 9:30am departure is the catch on a self-planned day: you need to be ashore early and on a fast connection to the city, and a 5-hour round trip leaves little margin before all-aboard. The ship-sold version is a private charter that includes the Port Chalmers transfers and lunch, which removes the timing risk.
